The late evening sun reflects off of a large tabular iceberg near the Russian base of Mirney in the Antarctic. A zodiac cruises by while the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov lies at anchore in the distance. Tabular icebers break off from ice sheets (massive glaciers) and are usually much larger than icebergs formed normal glaciers. With their characteristic straight sides and flat top, tabular icebergs can be identified miles away. The largest tabular iceberg was 96 miles long and several miles wide. Mirney (means Peace in Russian) is quite far south and so the sun sets very late at night. This photo was taken at approximately 2:00 in the morning.
