Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) by the thousands make their way into the cold waters of the Antarctic Peninsula for their morning swim. Deception Island is a still active volcano that last erupted in 1970 destroying a British and a Chilean base. The black beach at Baily Head was created from the lava and just up from the waters edge is an ampitheater that is home to thousands of pairs of Chinstrap pengins.
