Churchill Manitoba is a great place to see Snowy Owls (Nyctea scandica). They feed on lemming, voles, and small birds but lemmings make up the bulk of their diet and so the snowy population fluctuates with the lemming populations. They are large powerful birds, but are wary of humans so it is a rare occasion to see one in a setting like this. Snowy owls start out with a grayish plumage and then as they mature, they become more white throughout.
