These cliffs on Hood Island serve as an excellent "runway" for the waved albatross that nest nearby. Designed to soar, the albatross is awkward on land and not very good at flapping its wings, so strong winds and a good cliff help these birds take to the air. It is important for the chicks , that are taking off for the first time, to be sure they are strong enough to fly.
